Ephesians 5:25-29: 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church [q]in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,…

Marriage can be tough. Two people with individual lives come together with different back grounds, different expectations and agendas, different communication styles, and different goals to make some greater than the both of them. Throw in the controversy over the traditional Christian view of marriage and it can seem overwhelming. Fortunately, there are experts that have unraveled some of the mysteries of marriage for the rest of us. One of those experts is Dr. Gary Chapman, and Dr. Chapman recently gave over 400 couples a glimpse into that expertise at North Park Church in London.

Dr. Chapman’s expertise falls into many different areas of married life, but he is most known for his books on communication. It was from two of those books, “The 5 Love Languages” and “The Five Languages of Apology,” that he drew his inspiration. “The 5 Love Languages” has spent over three hundred weeks on the best seller list and sold over eleven million copies.

Beside the title and format the books are similar in that Chapman believes that everyone has a primary and secondary love language and apology language. The five love languages he writes about are words of affirmation, giving of gifts, acts of service, quality time (undivided attention), and physical touch. His five languages of apology are expressing regret, accepting responsibility, offering to make restitution, genuinely repenting, and requesting forgiveness. Chapman says that it is rare for a husband and wife to have the same language, and that they each need to learn to speak their spouse’s language, rather than just their own to gain and maintain marital harmony. Chapman’s speaking style is engaging and entertaining, and he brings a lot of humor to what is a generally serious subject.

A full range of Chapman’s writings are available at Creation Bookstore in London.
